Erie lost its status as the state's third largest city to
Allentown after the 2000 census.
Erie is the home of the US Brig Niagara. This antique
flagship was once commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry in the 1812 Battle of Lake
Erie. Due to the Niagara's presence, Erie's nickname is "The Flagship City."
Tourism is the driving force in the economy of Erie. Every
year more than four million people visit Presque Isle State Park, for water
recreation, and a new casino named for the state park is growing in popularity.

Erie is situated on the shore of Lake Erie in the
northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. An industrial city Erie
is the fourth largest city with a population of 104,000. The city is the seat of
government for Erie County. Erie is located at 42°7′46.42″N 80°5′6.77″W and 733
feet above from the sea level. Erie is very near to Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo,
New York; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Being an industrial area Erie’s main
focus is on plastic manufacturing and locomotive building.
